eMzantsi Carnival – Ubuntu in Motion

The ninth eMzantsi Carnival on 7 December delights in the unique phenomena of the deep south with a story of “eMzantsi Wonderland”. The carnival parade, which unites and celebrates the people of our diverse communities, started at 10h00 at the corner of Longboat Street and OuKaapseWeg Extension and culminated at the Sunnyacres Shopping Centre in Sunnydale.

When former president Nelson Mandela fell ill earlier this year the eMzantsi creative team felt that this was the year to pay tribute to him. He was written into the theme for 2013 as narrator for the ‘eMzantsi Wonderland’ story which was developed to celebrate the unique places, animals and plant life found in the Far South Peninsula.

In a series of workshops held at schools since August, 104 learners from Masiphumelele High developed and worked on elements of the Madiba puppet and Love Parade Float which will be showcased in this year’s carnival. It is with sad hearts that we found out about his passing but we paid homage and displaid the spirit of Ubuntu in full glory at the parade by a life-size Madiba puppet giving out love hearts to spectators displaying love as only he could.
