New Designs for Film Permits

The Cape Film Commission in conjunction with the City of Cape Town Department of Economic Development has embarked on a design project to coincide with World Design Capital 2014 following the announcement that Cape Town has won the bid.

In a meeting earlier this week the two bodies agreed that design goes beyond just buildings and architectural environments. It's in everything that we see and in many cases in places we don’t see.

As many of you are aware, there have been some teething issues to date with the City’s on-line booking system. In a recent meeting with the Cape Film Commissioner, the City officials have explained these to be a direct result of a lapse in communication between the mapping and permitting systems.

In order to address this, a number of configuration changes have been made in order to provide a more stable system and one that provides a permitting solution that matches the high demands of the film industry. The template designed for these processes will be utilised within the CFC.

In addition to the improvements, the City is also working closely with the Cape Film Commission and the City’s Film permitting office to seek opportunities to enhance the tool in support of the permitting process. This partnership extends to the designing of a suitable on-line permit booking system that standardises much of the booking process. Filmmakers will in future be able to book a location through one portal which will be managed by both the City and the CFC.

Further to these developments, the CFC has been given responsibility to develop the booking and permissions process for Provincial Property and Roads film permits and as such has been working with various Provincial based property owners to develop a standardised booking application process.

The complete design development and implementation of this system is aimed to go live on or before 2014.

During this process, the CFC will be engaging location scouts and both local and international filmmakers inorder to employ best practices which reflect the needs and demands of the broader industry.

Furthermore the Cape Film Commission welcomes any workable suggestions towards the upgrading and re-designing of a more interactive and resourceful CFC web site, also planned to go live before 2014.
