Cape Minstrels, Kaapse Klopse or Coon Carnival

Traditional festivals are always fun but also a reminder of times long passed.

First given the name of Kaapse Klopse than Coon Carnival and finally ending up with Cape Town Minstrels. History is telling us that the movement started around 1890.

Wellington Minstrels

The official march, a commemoration showing all troupes, is an annual event, so happening on the 2nd of each year when thousands of Minstrels marching along the old “Slave Route” though Cape Town. However, there are ongoing troupe competitions sometimes ending around April. For a small entrance fee visitors are welcome to witness such competitions.

Besides the annual Cape Town Minstrels Carnival selective troupes of Minstrels may be seen throughout the year at various occasions.
